My Story

Mission
The mission of Cards that Care is to enrich the daily lives of hospice and nursing home patients through handwritten cards.
Early in the pandemic, I watched my parents go to work every day in healthcare. I saw firsthand that the pandemic was affecting everyone in a profound way. Before the coronavirus, I was delivering baked goods to a local hospice unit to comfort the families while they were visiting their loved ones. When our stay-at-home order began, all of that stopped. The families and volunteers were no longer allowed to visit the patients. After brainstorming other ways to make the patients feel a little less lonely, I finally decided that handwritten cards were the best option. Letting the patients know that we are thinking about them is a small but meaningful way for us to brighten their day. I started sending cards every week for distribution.
It was soon after that I knew I could make a greater impact. I began asking my friends, teammates, and classmates to help me expand my efforts. Cards that Care is currently sending cards to six different facilities and has twenty-five volunteers from eight different high schools across Northeastern and Southeastern Pennsylvania. Since I started Cards that Care in August 2020, my team and outreach has grown massively. My team is now sending out two hundred and fifty cards per month!
